Armenian Air Defense Forces
The Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia consist of specialized land, military air and counter-air defense missions. The formation of the Armenian Air Defense Forces took place after the independence of Armenia.
In 1991, after the collapse of the USSR, all the anti-aircraft missile complexes in Armenia, as well as the radars, were withdrawn from the combat state and were in an uncertain state. On September 14, 1992, the Department of Air Defense was created by the decree of the RA Minister of Defense. The creation of the department was followed by the process of replenishment of the anti-aircraft troops by the appropriate officer subdivision.
During the liberation war, commanding and military units, subdivisions management network and a whole range of anti-aircraft missiles and radar systems were set up. During 1992-1994, in the course of the battle, anti-aircraft defense forces destroyed more than 10 enemy aircrafts and helicopters, and large quantities of military equipment.
The first airplane of the opponent was shot down on April 16, 1992, by the "Shilka" zenith self-propelled installation.Significant and special role in the development of the anti-aircraft defense forces played the signing of an agreement on creation of the CIS anti-missile defense system.
Since April 15, 1999, the RA Defense Forces have been carrying out combat duty along with the Russian Ministry of Defense. According to the joint program of the anti-missile defense system of CIS member states, since 1999 tactical exercises with combat missiles are held every two years at the Russian State Air Defense Forces (Ashuluk).
The main objectives of the Air Defense Forces are to ensure the state border infiltration in the airspace of the Republic of Armenia, as well as the joint anti-aircraft defense and aviation forces of the Russian military base in the air defense system of the Caucasian region. One of the main objectives of the anti-aircraft defense forces is to keep the ongoing forces and means in the proper state of readiness for preventing and excluding frontier offenses in the airspace and for reducing the air strikes by any other forces.
