Young Historians Discussed the Memory of the Great Patriotic War

70 years after the victory in the Great Patriotic War… Victory, gained by joint efforts… In honor of the 70th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War, on February 27-28 the Russian Political Science Center "North-South" with the support of the Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation of CIS member states (IFESCCO) held the first meeting of young Eurasian historian’s Club in Yerevan. In the framework of the project, young historians, political scientists, sociologists and experts on international relations from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Russia discussed the issue of shared memory and the perception of victory in the Great Patriotic War in the countries. Among the guests and the moderators of the session Professor in the Department of World Politics, Moscow State University, Alexander Barsenkov; president of the Association of Researchers of Russian Society, Gennady Bordyugov; Director of “Mother Armenia” military museum Avag Harutyunyan, etc., delivered their speeches.

During the meeting of the Club the approaches, emotions and reactions on the Great Patriotic War circulating in social networks were discussed. Each of the participants spoke about the main trends, the number of the discussions and the popularity of the subject in their countries. Some examples of the coverage of the topic in media and social networks were presented. But what is typical for all countries is that the younger generation remembers the Victory, and the negative comments are the exceptions of the general trend. At the same time the participants mentioned that there was a reduction of interest towards this topic from both media and the users of social networks. Examples of initiatives and projects of youth aimed at preserving memory and increasing the knowledge about these events were also presented. Participants noted that every year in all countries this day is celebrated at the national level.

Project participants also had an opportunity to present their nation's contribution to the victory in the war. Representatives of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia made reports describing the feats and achievements of their compatriots during the Great Patriotic War. At the same time, it was emphasized that all peoples have had their implacable contribution, and it was a total victory, the memory of which today must unite people.

The first meeting of the Club ended with the intellectual game "What? Where? When?" on the theme of the Great Patriotic War. Club meeting will also be held in Baku, Irkutsk and Astana.

Armenia is proud of its great contribution to the victory and achievements of his marshals, generals, heroes and ordinary soldiers. For us, May 9 is a day of two victories, which, however, does not diminish, but further strengthens the memory of the victory of 1945 and the feats of the Armenian people in the Great Patriotic...
