UN Celebrtes Peacekeeper’s Day

The United Nations Organiztion is celebrating Peacekeeper’s day on May 29.

According to the March 2015 data 125 thousand people took part in peacekeeping operations. This number included 93 thousand militants and observers, more than 13 thousand police workers, more than 5 thousand international civilian workers, more than 11 thousand local civilian workers, also more than a thousand UN volunteers.

The UN does not possess armed forces thus works with the contingents, provided by the member-states. Today 128 states provide military and police contingent to the UN.

Today the "Blue helmets" have 16 operations in different parts of the world, the majority of them in Africa, RIA Novosti reports.
