Emin Huseynov: Another "Traitor of Homeland"

As a result of an agreement between the governments of Azerbaijan and Switzerland, human rights defender Emin Huseynov, who for the period of ten months was hiding in the Swiss Embassy in Baku, eventually left for Switzerland giving up the Azerbaijani citizenship.

The matter is that young Emin Huseynov, who is the director of media freedom group Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, is already a long time that is being ruthlessly persecuted by the Azerbaijani authorities, because of publicly condemning and harshly criticizing them.

Though now Huseynov is free and safe, the Azerbaijani authorities are putting pressure on his family members and relatives, periodically questioning Emin's mother and brother and threatening them.

According to Azerbaijani media, particularly Day.az, Haqqin.az- and others "traitor" Emin Huseynov with the guarantee of the Swiss government that supports him, refused to organize any anti-Azerbaijani propaganda in the West. During the first few days of his departure he was keeping his "man's word," not answering the provocative questions of the European journalists.

But a few days later, as the Azerbaijani media notes in panic, despite all his promises, Huseynov suddenly appears on American TV channel CNN and "in any way denigrates the Azerbaijani government and with his terrible English blows lies on their address."

It should be noted that in addition to Emin, there are a number of other social activists, journalists and lawyers that were prosecuted and arrested, among them Rasul Jafarov (6.5 years of imprisonment), Intigam Aliyev (7.5 years of imprisonment), Leila Yunus and her husband Arif Yunus, Anar Mamadlin and Bashir Suleymanli.
