Public Mood in Germany has Changed After Cologne Events

After the events of the German city of Cologne, when the migrants attacked the local women, Germans showed even more critical attitude toward the refugees. According to a survey done by the Institute INSA more than 60% of Germans have negative approach towards refugee acceptance by the government, 25% said that anyway their opinion has not changed on migrant issue and 14.5 percent refused to answer the question.

In addition to Cologne, German police received another 600 reports the recent days from Hamburg, Stuttgart, Berlin, Frankfurt and other cities, complaining against sexual harassment, beatings or robberies.

On January 11 in Leipzig there was even a march held with the participation of several thousand people. The protesters were shouting nationalist slogans and insults addressed to Chancellor Angela Merkel, who accepted more than one million immigrants only last year.

Merkel in turn stated that the migration crisis in Europe made vulnerable the authorities of the EU Member States who are no longer able to handle the situation.

"We are vulnerable to all these challenges because they still have not been established the necessary rules and regulations to overcome such a crisis," German Chancellor said.

Though, at the same time Merkel has spoken against closing borders, the measures that are currently applied in some European countries, stating that freedom of movement is somewhat dependent on the fate of the eurozone.

Germany, unlike other European states, in 2015 received thousands of refugees from Africa and the Middle East whose presence has led to the destabilization of the country.
