The Armenian National Committee of America Urged Obama’s Administration to Take Measures on the Confiscation of St. Giragos Church in Turkey

The Armenian National Committee of America has expressed its concern to the US government regarding reports that the Turkish government has confiscated the recently restored St. Giragos (Surp Giragos) Armenian Church and other religious sites in the Turkish Diyarbakir region, Asbarez reports. 

In response to ANCA inquiries, a senior Obama Administration official announced that the US Embassy in Ankara and consulates in Adana and Istanbul are closely following the decision of the Turkish Council of Ministers in recent days, and has raised the matter with both the central government and local authorities. The Turkish government has informed US officials that the decree is "a bureaucratic measure" to restore the structures damaged during fighting in recent months. The official also added that legal challenges have already been filed against this action in local courts.
