Ara Qochunyan: After the Military Coup Attempt There can be Changes in Turkish-US Relations (EXCLUSIVE)
"I can say with surprise that after an awful night Turkey woke up in quite a normal situation. The attempt of military coup is averted and the authorities now have a full control in the country. In Istanbul the shops are open, people go to work, public transport mostly works," the editor-in-chief of "Zhamanak" daily newspaper in Turkey, Ara Qochunyan said in a talk with "Armedia" IAA, speaking about the situation in Turkey after the attempt of military coup.
Referring to the causes of the military coup attempt, Qochunyan mentioned that it is a long time the Turkish authorities have been alarming about possible actions of terrorists, as well as of the "parallel structure", particularly about possible damage to the country or starting unrest in the country. "Those predictions, unfortunately, were fulfilled last night. There was a military coup attempt in Turkey, which was averted and the whole world witnessed that the Turkish people, hearing the call of President Erdogan, took the streets, filled the squares and avenues of the biggest cities and stood for the democratic system of the country," Qochunyan mentioned.
According to the editor-in-chief of "Zhamanak" daily newspaper the consequences are quite big and after the last night Turkey is now welcoming a new political era, which will have a direct influence on the balance of the internal politics of the country. "From the first moments of the events all opposition parties, I should mention, even hurried to express their support to the authorities of the countries," Qochunyan mentioned, adding that until recently Turkey had quite polarized inter-political relations, now the situation has changed.
"I think that several changes will also take place in the external politics of Turkey, particularly, in the Turkish-American relations. During the coming period we can witness interesting developments. From yesterday night on the Turkish media is writing that the US President Obama is well-informed on the events, the US State Secretary John Kerry at night had a telephone conversation with the Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu. At different levels the US authorities have expressed their support to Turkey. It is not excluded that in the context of this support Turkey will demand something tangible from the US. It is long time that Turkey is expecting that the head of the "parallel structure" will be returned from the US. These demands can again be voiced."
