April is Always Followed by May...

Vardan Petrosyan

The word "April" in Armenian sounds like "to live." That word, however, betrayed the guys defending the border of Karabakh (Artsakh Republic or NKR (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic)) in the night of April 2. The boys who became heroes overnight.

Today it has been four years since that April morning; the one that brought bad news from the borders. The Azerbaijani forces attacked simultaneously from different directions. In the same morning, we learned about the first victims – the pupils, who did not reach their schools in Martuni region of NKR, the old people, who were brutally massacred in the village of Talish in Martuni region. Later on there were other scary news of young boys at their posts undergoing the first, unexpected, treacherous and most severe strikes. Regardless of the order to retreat, they kept standing and defending the border and their post, their homeland, their truth.

It has been four years since the April war. One cannot perceive how those guys managed to know more about patriotism than they had been taught? How they managed to look into the eyes of death and be stronger than it is? And… how could they ever leave?

Commemorating the power of their spirit, that united the Armenians all over the world, taking pride in us, we reiterate, "Forgive us guys!" Forgive us, who are alive! Forgive us that May, the month of victory, follows April, and that this May will again come without you.
