Nevruz to Become a Milestone for the Kurdish Peace Process?

During the recent times the Kurdish peace process has been a topic of hot debates among the political parties, as well as among the society. This debate continues till now and today it was declared that there are many expectations from Nevruz, the annual festival celebrated on March 21 to mark the beginning of spring celebrated by Kurds. According to the Deputy Prime Minister Yalçın Akdoğan, as Hurriyet reports, Nevruz will become a milestone in the Kurdish peace process. "In Nevruz, hopefully, we will burn the violence, clashes and weapons in the fire of democracy and we will altogether jump over the fire of democracy," – Akdoğan said.

Besides the factor of Nevruz, considered to play a great role for the peace process, Akdoğan also noted that democracy in Turkey is already so mature that can solve any problem, mentioning that if there is democracy, arms should not have their place.

In his turn the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan also expressed hope that Kurds will lay down arms and it will mark a new era of stability in the country.

HDP Deputy Parliamentary Group Chair Pervin Buldan referring to the possible message of Ocalan in Nevruz, demanded that this was in visual or audio version, claiming that this would have a great impact on Kurds and create a positive atmosphere for progress in the government-led peace process.

The belief of the government that Nevruz can become a deciding point for the Kurdish peace process have no basis as the expected Ocalan’s message can both be constructive and destructive, regarding the results of the close negotiations and mutual agreements. As for the mature democracy in Turkey, there are a lot of facts to prove just the contrary – that the country does not have anything in common with democracy, among them huge problems in the judicial system, persecution of the journalists – the last example being the editor-in-chief of Today’s Zaman, etc.
