Kurdish Question Needs to Be Solved

On the eve of the Parliamentary elections of Turkey, clashes between PKK and Turkish forces intensify. After four Turkish soldiers were killed in the eastern Ağrı province on April 11, extra troops and armed helicopters were sent against the militants.

As Hurriyet reports, Turkish government says that the PKK by their actions try to destabilize the country before the elections. "Twenty-five terrorists are engaged in clashes right now against our soldiers. A certain political party is trying to gain votes through the actions of this divisive terrorist organization," – Hurriyet quotes Erdogan’s words referring to Anatolian news agency.

This kind of activeness by Kurds can be explained by the fact that their demands and the promises of the AKP party have not been fulfilled yet. Two years ago PKK and the Turkish government agreed to a ceasefire to end the struggle that caused thousands of people’s deaths. The sides were negotiating at last to come to a final deal and to declare peace, but till now this has not happened. The recent activeness of the PKK can be explained by this fact as well. During these whole years Turkey has not done any serious and touchable steps so as to solve the Kurdish question. Moreover, Erdogan even declared that there is no Kurdish question. Elections are a good occasion for the PKK to show their disappointment and to hinder the AKP to receive 2/3 of the votes – votes needed to make constitutional changes and make the country presidential. In such a situation AKP, if at the beginning of its campaign was hoping to get the votes of the Kurds by making this or that promises, now loses that chance.

On this occasion Deputy Prime Minister Yalçın Akdoğan wrote on Twitter: "Attempts against public order, election safety and the peace of the nation cannot be tolerated. To put hopes on guns in an election is a sign of desperation and disrespect of the national will." However, Turkish authorities do not want to admit that the reason why Kurds have become more active now, is that Kurdish question still needs to be solved.
