Israel and Turkey May Sign Compensation Agreement over Mavi Marmara

© electronicintifada.net

Turkey and Israel are close to signing an agreement on compensation for the killing of 10 Turkish activists by Israeli commandos in 2010 onboard the Mavi Marmara ship, a Turkish ruling party official said on February 15, Hurriyet reports.

The Israeli army raided the Mavi Marmara on the 31 May, 2010, killing 10 passengers on board in international waters. The incident led to the breaking off of relations between Turkey and Israel, with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan describing the attack as a "cause for war" and insisted there can be no normalisation in ties with Israel unless its conditions for ending the Gaza blockade and compensation for the deaths of the activists are met.
