Germany: Seminars on Armenian Genocide
In the German city of Hamburg, seminars were held on the Armenian Genocide and Turkified Armenians, Akunq.net reports. The workshops were organized by Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, close to the Left Party (the successor to the Communists of former East Germany).
On the first day, the seminar "Turkified Armenians in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey" was held. Lawyer Ilias Gevorg Uyaar, who moved to Germany from Turkey; the responsible for educational issues of Alevis Union in German, Ismail Kaplan and turkologist Meline Anumyan made speeches.
The coordinator of the seminar was Turkish writer Dogan Akhanly, who for many years had been persecuted by the Turkish authorities because of the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide. About 150 people attended the event.
On the second day the seminar "Yozgat: 100 years ago" took place. During it Meline Hanumyan presented a report on the deportation of Armenians and the judicial process in connection with the events of those times. Turkish writer Dogan Akhanly spoke about the need to develop a culture of historical memory and to establish direct contacts between societies.
