Mogherini Congratulated Armenia on 25th Anniversary of Independence
On September 22, while participating in the activities of the 71th regular session of the UN General Assembly, Edward Nalbandian, Acting Foreign Minister of Armenia, had a meeting with Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.
The EU High Representative congratulated Edward Nalbandian on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Independence of Armenia and outlined that the European Union will continue to support the ongoing reforms in Armenia.
Federica Mogherini welcomed the agreement on the new Electoral Code reached between the leadership of Armenia and the parliamentary opposition, emphasizing that the latter is an important step ahead of the next year’s parliamentary elections. In this context, Edward Nalbandian expressed gratitude for the support the EU has provided to Armenia for years.
Edward Nalbandian and Federica Mogherini touched upon the interim negotiations over the EU - Armenia New Framework Agreement held on September 19, in Brussels, and mutually commended its productiveness.
The interlocutors exchanged views on the ongoing negotiations in the directions of political dialogue, sectoral cooperation and trade issues. An importance was attached to the holding of next round of negotiations in the end of October, in Yerevan, with an intention to conclude the process in near future.
Edward Nalbandyan presented the agreements reached at the Vienna and Saint Petersburg Summits initiated by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries, which were aimed at the peaceful settlement of the conflict, while emphasizing that up until now Azerbaijan refuses to implement those agreements. Federica Mogherini reaffirmed the full support of the European Union to the efforts exerted by the Minsk Group Co-Chairs towards the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
