Erdogan Fears the Treaty of Sevres

Тurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan once again remembered the Treaty of Sevres. The document was signed in 1920 between the Ottoman Empire and the Allied Powers after World War I. A significant provision of the document was the inclusion of the Wilsonian Mandate for Armenia, which envisioned a Republic of Armenia that included much of its historic territory.

"At this critical time, when there are attempts to restructure the world and our region, if we stop, we will find ourselves facing Sevres conditions," said Erdogan, Asbarez reports.

Turkish President also spoke about the losses suffered by Turkey after the Treaty of Lausanne, signed in 1923, which defines the boundaries of modern Turkey. According to the agreement, Turkey refused its claims over other parts of the Ottoman Empire. "We are a nation that still lives with the sorrows of what we lost at Lausanne. To speak frankly, Turkey is going through its greatest struggle since the War of Independence. This is a struggle to preserve a single nation, a single homeland, a single state," Erdogan said.

Turkish President remembers about these treaties quite often. He says the Treaty of Lausanne should be reviewed and become a subject of negotiations. Turkish President insists "the Treaty of Lausanne is neither holy scripture, nor the holy book", and should be reexamined in light of securing a better deal for Turkey. Earlier Erdogan openly stated that "the physical boundaries do not correspond to the borders of Turkey’s heart." Thus, Turkey cannot remain indifferent to such regions and countries such as Iraq, Syria, Libya, Crimea, Karabakh, Bosnia, Georgia, Ukraine, the Balkans, North Africa and "other brother regions."
