EU Population Increases due to Migration
The population of the European Union rose to 512 million in 2016, with an additional 1.5 million people on 2015 figures due to migrants, ANSA reports citing to the data from EU statistics agency Eurostat.
The source reports that both the birth and death rates were even for 2016 (both at 5.1 million) so the population increase is due to migration.
Germany remains first for population with 82.8 million residents (16.2% of the EU population), with an increase of 7.6 residents for every 1,000; followed by France (67 million with a increase of 4 per 1,000), Great Britain (65.8 million, up 6.5 residents per 1,000 despite Brexit), Spain (46.5 million, up 1.9 per 1,000), and Poland (38 million, up 0.2 per 1,000).
The countries that saw their populations grow the most, in relative terms, were: Luxembourg (up 19.8 residents per 1,000 residents), Sweden (up 14.5 per 1,000), Malta (up 13.8 per 1,000), Ireland (up 10.6 per 1,000), Austria (up 9.5 per 1,000), Germany and Cyprus (both up 7.6 per 1,000), Great Britain (up 6.5 per 1,000), and the Netherlands (up 6 per 1,000).
