Demirtas: Turkish Government is Creating an Illusion of Peace

The Skirmish on Kurdish peace process in the Turkish Parliament continues. Kurdish People's Democratic Party leader Demirtas, referring to the PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan's call to lay down arms and start negotiations with the Turkish authorities, said that the Turkish authorities have no intention of settling the Kurdish issue. "This government is trying to create an illusion of peace, and not establish peace," - said Demirtas adding that the government has delayed making public Ocalan's this statement on peace more than 7 months in order to be able to use it in the upcoming parliamentary elections. He also mentioned that due to the upcoming parliamentary elections in June no legislative act was possible to adopt which would establish legal basis for agreements reached around the Kurdish question.

Really, Ocalan's this statement was made in a very profitable time for the Turkish government. Long-awaited peace with Kurds has a crucial importance for the victory of the ruling party in the parliamentary elections.

During the recent times the Turkish authorities are being criticized both for economic downfall and the increasing threat by IS for the national security of Turkey. The Turkish authorities have also been criticized by Kurds for not helping the people of the Syrian Kurdish city Kobani.
