NKR Elections: a Proof for Democracy

  •  NKR

On May 3, parliamentary elections will be held in the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. For the first time of the history of Nagoro-Karabakh since its independence there will be a professional parliament, which means that all the parliamentarians will be paid and will be fully engaged in the work of the Parliament. 33 Members of Parliament will be elected - 22 by proportional party results and 11 on majority vote. 7 political parties are running for the elections - Free Homeland, Democratic Party of Artsakh, Armenian Revolutionary Party, Movement-88, National Renaissance, NK Communist Party, Peace and Development.

As the elections day approaches, the struggle between the parties becomes even tenser. Despite the differences of ideologies, approaches to this or that question, which becomes obvious not only by the speeches of the leaders and the representatives of the parties, but also by their election platforms, there is something that unites all these parties. All of them want international recognition of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, as this is the way Artsakh can develop even more, strengthen its democracy, deepen its ties with the foreign world and be treated as an equal partner for the international community.

In spite being in the situation of "no war, no peace" Nagorno-Karabakh Republic was able to develop as a state, to build democracy and become an example for many countries in regard with freedom of expression, human rights and rule of law.  Being not recognized country it is trying to do its best to establish some relations with foreign organizations, actors and countries. Recently, the Democratic Party of Artsakh joined the European Free Alliance Party, which supports the right of self-determination and even adopted a statement, calling all the UN member states recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. This is, of course, a step forward for NKR. In addition to this the elections, which, as the course of the campaign showed, is going to be in accordance with all democratic standards and will have more than 100 observers, among them also international ones.
