The Parliamentary Elections of NKR were for the Artsakh People and Not for the World

  •  NKR

May 3 NKR Parliamentary elections, according to the representatives of all 7 political parties, including the opposition, as well as around 110 international observers from more than 25 countries have passed in accordance with the Election Code and the European standards, marking another step forward towards democracy. The European Free Alliance the member of which recently became the Democratic Party of Artsakh (it received 19.1% of the votes) issued a statement in which it is said that the parliamentary elections in NKR confirmed the high level of democracy there, adding "the EU should finally change its policy in the Nagorno Karabakh issue and assist the landlocked country towards its path to international recognition. This is the only path towards a sustainable peace settlement in the area and a development that would strengthen values such as democracy, justice and protection of human rights against armed threat and aggression." During its recent General Assembly, the EFA had called all the UN member states recognize Noagorno-Karabakh Republic.

The reaction and the statements of other international institutions and individual states, however, were not so much positive and encouraging. But this also has an answer: Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is internationally not recognized country and any process there, which clearly indicates that Artsakh is a well-established, democratic state, makes Azerbaijan nervous and other countries, international institutions act in according to their interests and existing political atmosphere.

The EU, as it is written in the enpi-info.eu, declared that it does not recognize "the constitutional and legal framework within which 'parliamentary elections' were held in Nagorno-Karabakh on 3 May."

The acting deputy spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State Jeff Rathke, as lragir.am reports, announced that "the United States does not recognize the NKR parliamentary election on May 3, however, at least he mentioned that the US acknowledges that the people of Nagorno-Karabakh must play a role in shaping its future."

The Spanish MFA called the parliamentary elections in NKR as "not reliable and legitimate" and the Czech Republic declared it "does not recognize the constitutional and legal framework within which these elections were being held."

The reaction of the Ukrainian MFA was almost with the same note, but besides saying that the country does not recognize the elections, it also called them "illegitimate" and the Georgian MFA declared that the NKR May 3 elections "do not have legitimacy."

This is how the world reacted to the NKR parliamentary elections… Nevertheless, as it was on the highest levels and by different people declared, these elections were not for the world and were not for demonstrating something. They were for the people of Artsakh, for them to be able to participate in the governance of the country, to have their voice in decision-making process. The fact that the people of Artsakh knows and believes that the parliamentary elections have passed in just and transparent way and that this was another step forward towards democracy, is the most important thing. The reactions of the others by and large do not matter much…
