Not Easy to Be a Woman

"Being a woman is a terribly difficult task, since it consists principally in dealing with men," – Joseph Conrad.

Happy International Women’s Day… This day is celebrated on March 8 and the first time it was internationally celebrated was in 1911. The decision was made at Copenhagen and as the official website of the International Women’s Day informs, the first countries to celebrate this day were Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, but initially they were celebrating it on March 19. This is a day to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations. In 1913 International Women's Day was transferred to March 8 and this day remained as a day for honoring women for all they did and are doing. This day is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. In 1977, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights.

International Women’s Day is officially celebrated in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, , Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. Interestingly enough there are countries were this day is an official holiday only for women. These countries are China, Madagascar and Nepal.

21 years passed since the historic roadmap Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, signed by 189 governments for realizing the women’s rights, unwomen.org reports. On this occasion the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a statement: "We must take a clear global stance against this total assault on women’s human rights. The international community needs to translate its outrage into meaningful action, including humanitarian aid, psycho-social services, support for livelihoods, and efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.  With women and girls often the first targets of attack, their rights must be at the centre of our strategy to address this staggering and growing challenge.  Empowered women and girls are the best hope for sustainable development following conflict. They are the best drivers of growth, the best hope for reconciliation, and the best buffer against radicalization of youth and the repetition of cycles of violence," – the statement says.

God made women to be strong - to be a good wife for their husband, a good mother for her children and a happy and an admirable person for the rest of the world.  In the end one should only quote Cher’s words "Women are the real architects of society."
