Yemeni Talks Give Hopes for Stabilization of the Situation

As the talks on Yemen crisis in Saudi Arabia with the participation of Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Prime Minister Khaled Bahah and around 400 delegates with leading factions including the Sunni Islah party, Socialists and members of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's political party, the General People's Congress (GPC), Houthi Shiite rebels decided to  boycott it, Al Jazeera reports. The main reason for not participating in the talks is that they demand the negotiations to be held in Yemen.

Though the Houthis are not participating in the talks, representatives of General People's Congress headed by former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who supports the Houthi rebels, are present in the talks. This was said by the head of the conference organizing committee Abdulaziz al-Jaber, who, however, added that they are not going to make any deal with Saleh, who since November has been in the UN and the US sanctions lists.

The talks are based on the Gulf initiative and the UN Security Council resolution of the last month and it follows the 4-days humanitarian truce between a Saudi-led coalition and Shiite rebels, which, however, was from time to time violated.

As it is said today’s talks are not going to be just a dialogue, but the parties will come to an agreement, which will be binding for all parties present in the talks in Riyadh. As Jaber said during the meeting, the parties will work on a new constitution that will be presented to the Yemeni people. They will also discuss the question of holding a referendum for putting the results of the dialogue into practice, indianexpress.com reports.

The positive outcome of the talks launched today is of great importance not only for Yemen, the Yemeni people, but also for the security and the stability of the region. The Yemeni conflict since March, according to the UN data, has taken lives of more than 1,600 people and has left 6,200 injured. Around 52,000 Yemenis are internally displaced. To help Yemen, Saudi Arabia-led coalition started airstrikes against the Houthi rebels from March 26. However, it is obvious and the examples of other conflicts have also proved that attacking at each other would never bring to peace. In this regard, the talks are a great opportunity to sit around a table, discuss all the question, make compromises and come to an agreement. This is the way, all the sides can avoid further deaths…
