Will Armenia Recognize Nagorno-Karabakh Republic?

"I would not like that the possible legal answer to Azerbaijan by us is perceived only in the context of one step – recognition," the Chairman of NGO "European Integration," RA National Assembly Deputy Karen Bekaryan said at a press conference, in an answer to the question of a journalist, whether the legal steps of the Armenians sides that the RA President mentioned about in his speech means recognition of the Republic of Artsakh by Armenia.

"The RA on the level of different high-level officials, as well as on President’s level has many times mentioned, that at some moment we will have to resort to adequate measures. In those statements the political, legal and military steps have not been separated. In this regard, President’s this announcement I would not call a one made for the first time, but would mention that this time the President was just more precise in his statement."

"I would not like that the possible legal answer to Azerbaijan by us is perceived only in the context of one step – recognition. The framework of those steps is wider and each of them can be used according to the moment and need. In fact, if they have not so far been applied, it was simply a manifestation of the constructive position in the negotiation process. In this context, I should also mention that the constructive position of the Armenian side can in no way be compared with the position adopted by Azerbaijan, which the Azerbaijani side presents to the international community in the following way: "International community, if I do not start a war against Armenia, consider this a concession by me."

Bekaryan also added that the international community is fortunately starting to understand that this position of Azerbaijan is illogical.

Referring to the possible legal actions of the Armenian sides, Bekaryan listed 3 of them:

  1. A new, broader agreement between the RA and NKR with all fixed spheres, including details of military mutual support.
  2. Public discussions with wide involvement of the RA and NKR public.
  3. Expansion of international security tools for the RA, including the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic's security.

"Believe, these examples can be continued," concluded Karen Bekaryan.
