US Tries to Improve Relations with Russia with New Sanctions

MIGnews

US sanctions against Russia have caused heated discussions. As it is known, US President Donald Trump has signed the bill on the strengthening of sanctions against three countries - Russia, Iran and North Korea. The document was the result of active and continued work of members of both parties in Congress, it was adopted by an overwhelming number of votes, TASS reports. It is noteworthy, that Trump signed the bill behind closed doors, without the fanfare that has customarily accompanied his signing of executive orders. He said, that the new bill violates his powers in the formulation of foreign policy, Reuters reports. When signing the bill, he said he is doing that for the sake of national unity. According to him, the bill represents the desire of the American people to see that Russia is taking steps to improve relations with the United States. Trump added, that when working on a bill in Congress, the concerns of European partners and American business have been taken into account. At the same time the head of the White House thinks, that the bill on sanctions contradicts the US Constitution.

Trump's statements did not leave indifferent the American congressmen. According to Trump opponents, the statement made by President Trump at the signing of the document raises serious questions whether his administration intends to follow the bill. The Republicans were also dissatisfied. They said that Russia will consider all this a manifestation of weakness, and the current administration does not intend to seriously oppose Russia.

Let's note that the Vice-President of the United States Michael Pence also tried to smooth the situation. According to him, Trump's decision to sign the bill demonstrates that the current administration hopes "for better days and better relations" with the Russian Federation, but this will depend only on the further actions of the RF.

Despite the statements of US President and Vice President, Moscow has adopted a tough position. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that adopting a bill on sanctions, the United States declared Russia a full-fledged trade war, putting an end to the hope of improving bilateral relations. The head of government expressed confidence that the new sanctions against Moscow would last for decades.

Russian President's spokesman Dmitry Peskov also commented on the bill signing. He said that this changes nothing, as the document would have been implemented in any way, Ria.ru reports. Speaking about the possibility of retaliatory measures, the press secretary reminded that they "have already been accepted." The Foreign Ministry of RF announced in his turn, that the new sanctions will not force Moscow to move away from its chosen path.

The document signed by Trump puts restrictive measures against Russia, adopted by the previous US administration headed by President Barack Obama. These sanctions created significant obstacles to the cooperation of the Armed Forces of Russia and the United States. In particular, the bill implies tougher sanctions against Russian oil and gas companies.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that the European Union is ready to act in response to the United States, which adopted a new bill on anti-Russian sanctions. Juncker stressed that the US cannot take such decisions without agreement with the EU, as new anti-Russian sanctions can harm European interests in the economic sphere. Earlier the authorities of Germany condemned the new bill on sanctions. The leaders of German believe that the sanctions are contrary to international bill. Austrian Foreign Minister, OSCE Chairman Sebastian Kurtz said in his turn that the countries of the European Union should jointly react to US new sanctions against Russia. And only Poland welcomes the signing of the bill on new sanctions. Poland MFA announced that such decision is in line with the strategic interests of Warsaw and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

Some experts note that Trump signed the bill due to the fact that US president is constantly accused of having links with Russia, and he was afraid to stand up for another wave of criticism. Others note that Trump did not veto the bill for one simple reason - in both chambers of the Congress an absolute two-party majority was formed, sufficient to overcome the presidential veto. So, for Trump this was not only senseless, but also harmful for his relations with the Congress. One thing is obvious: the most serious crisis between the United States and Russia after the Cold War is getting deeper.
