Turkey and the European Commission Signed an Agreement on Employment Programs

On 27 February, Turkey and the European Commission signed an agreement in Ankara calculated on a seven-year program for employment and social innovation with a budget of 920 million euros, is said in a statement of the Ministry for EU Affairs of Turkey.

The agreement of "Employment and Social Innovation Program" was signed by Deputy Minister of Turkey for EU Affairs Ahmet Yucel and the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Policy Marian Thiessen

According to the statement, the aim of the program is to achieve a high level of employment in Turkey, guarantee decent social protection and fight against social discrimination and poverty, as well as better working conditions.

“It will serve as a financing instrument at EU level for the modernization of social policy, employment policy and labor mobility," – is said in a statement.

The program will be coordinated by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Turkey. It will become part of the national action plan for Turkey's accession to the EU, which was presented by the Minister for EU Affairs of Turkey Volkan Bozkır in December, 2014.

The Association Agreement between the EU and Turkey was signed in 1963. Application for EU membership Ankara filed in 1987. Accession negotiations started only in 2005. Turkey must comply with 35 EU policy chapters and implement all reforms indicated in the chapters to become an EU member. Only 14 out of 35 chapters have so far been opened, the reaining 17 are still closed.
