Is it Ukraine that is Disappointed from the EU or Vice Verse?
The Ukrainian side's expectations were not met during the EU-Ukraine summit held in Kiev on April 27. The summit was attended by senior government officials of the European Union, among them the President of European Council, Donald Tusk and the President of European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, who discussed Ukraine's political and economic reforms, as well as financial support by the EU and other issues.
On the eve of the summit, the Ukrainians had hopes that their European friends would send peacekeeping troops to the conflict zone, but to the great disappointment of Kiev, EU delegation rejected such a proposal. Instead they promised to send a civil "assessment" missionthat would clarify the possibilities for future defense and security policy.
"At this moment, to be honest, I do not see any enthusiasm in Europe when it comes to sending a special peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. Although, the things could change",- said EU Council President Donald Tusk.
Russian MP Pushkov believes that Ukraine’s charm has gone and Europe is already tired of Kiev. "Behind all the hugs and smiles, there will be some very tough talks with Ukraine, and I do not think Poroshenko has any trump card to get out of this situation,"- the deputy of RF said .
The director of the CIS Institute Konstantin Zatulin, in his turn mentioned: "Ukraine for Europe, within all its importance, is not a kind of problem to sacrifice one’s soldiers, capital, stability etc."
According to Zatulin, Ukraine has already gone too far, demanding peacekeeping forces, and in general, demanding anything that Russia is strongly against, so the EU's position correspondingly becomes more and more skeptical.
However, as it turned out, Ukraine has not limited with the EU, and it has also asked the UN for peacekeeping forces, the idea of which was surely not realistic, as Russia would use its veto right in the UN Security Council in case such an issue is discussed. And even if the RF were not a permanent member of UNSC, neither UN nor the EU would ever want to escalate the conflict, further exacerbating the already tense relations between Russia and the West.
