Arab World Discusses the Idea of Creating Unified Military Forces

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi has called for the creation of a unified rapid military Arab force to fight against the Islamic State and other groups, RT reports. "There is an urgent need for the creation of a multi-purpose common Arab military force... able to intervene rapidly to fight terrorism and the activities of terrorist groups," - al-Arabi said during a meeting of league Foreign Ministers in Cairo, AFP reported. He also stressed the need for "cooperation in areas related to security protection and the exchange of information between Arab countries."

It also became known that the bloc representatives will gather in Egypt on March 28-29 to discuss the possibility of setting up a defense unit to battle Islamic State militants. Earlier, Egyptian President Abdel Sisi also called to set up such a military force for defense purposes. In an interview with Al-Arabiya Sisi said that such an anti-jihadist force could get support from Arab League members Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. He added that he had already discussed the establishment of such a unit with Jordan's King Abdullah II, who supported the notion.

It should be mentioned that Egypt launches airstrikes in Libya from February targeting IS positions after the extremists executed 21 Coptic Christians. Arab League members, such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain and Qatar have also participated in the US-led airstrikes against IS in Syria and Iraq.

The idea of creating such unified military forces is not new in the Arab world. In late 2014 Gulf Cooperation Council announced about the intention of establishing joint naval forces. GCC was founded in 1981 and includes 6 Arab monarchies: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Oman. Last year an information appeared that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait are holding secret talks for creating a new union the main goal of which should be the fight against the Islamic State.
